Woodrow 5th Grade Clap Out 2020

Dear Sylvan Union School District Staff, Students, and Families:

I hope that you and your loved ones are safe, healthy, and weathering this crisis as well as possible under these circumstances.

Originally, it was shared with you that the earliest students would return to school would be May 4, 2020. We now have further guidance and directives from State Superintendent of Instruction Tony Thurmond and Governor Gavin Newsom to keep schools closed through the end of the current school year.

With this new information and an abundance of caution, the Stanislaus County Office of Education and all local school districts, are taking a safety-first approach and immediate action to extend the school facility closures through the end of the school year. We want you to understand that the 2019-20 school year is not over. However, it will look and feel very different as we transition from classroom instruction into distance learning. We understand that distance learning can look different for each district, and a student's ability to learn in an independent study model has to be assessed. Distance learning in the Sylvan District is taking place in three phases. Phase I includes online resources for students and families accessible at https://sylvan-ca.schoolloop.com/learningresources. Phase II includes optional, ungraded, At-Home Learning Packets available at the link above and also in printed, hard-copy packets for drive-through pick-up at school sites on Friday, April 3 from 9:00-11:00 AM. Phase III of our plan will take place from April 20 until the end of the school year. In the coming weeks, we will be providing more details regarding this phase.

In light of school closures for the remainder of the year, we regret to inform you that all field trips and school activities and events, such as Open House and 8th Grade Promotion, will not take place as planned. We share your deep sense of disappointment that these Sylvan traditions and celebrations will not occur. We appreciate your understanding that the current situation has required us to respond in ways that protect the health and safety of our community.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we are all quickly transitioning into a new way of teaching and learning. It is challenging for many educators and our families to learn and communicate in a very new world, but working together, we can and will meet this challenge.

I am proud to see staff working collaboratively and diligently to engage with students and parents via phone, email, and in our distance learning model. It is important for students to stay connected and feel supported as we continue with valuable learning.

SUSD and our staff will continue to:

  • Provide breakfast and lunch meals for students (Monday-Friday from 9:00-11:00 AM)
  • Assist with school enrollment for 2020-2021 school year and other office duties
  • Maintain our schools, buildings and grounds
  • Provide distance learning
  • Update website with additional resources and materials to support parents
  • Arrange for refunds of previously-purchased school trips or activities

Please keep in mind that all of us as parents, teachers, district staff, administrators, and community members are facing these challenging times together. We have elderly relatives to worry about; we are caring for our children at home, while many of us, including our teachers, are working from home. We understand that some families are facing challenging employment situations and business slowdowns that are affecting people financially and emotionally. Resources offered through Stanislaus County can be contacted by calling 2-1-1. If you or a family member, friend or neighbor is struggling with mental health or could benefit from non-crisis interventions and support, please call the Stanislaus County Warm Line at (209) 558-4600 (24 hours per day, 7 days per week). For people who experience a mental health crisis or emotional distress, please contact the Suicide Prevention and Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK or 1-800-SUICIDE. This support line is available 24/7/365.

We thank you for your cooperation as we adjust to this rapidly-evolving situation with the best interests of all students in mind. Please visit the district website at www.sylvan.k12.ca.us for more information and helpful resources.

Please be safe out in the community and take care of one another.

Sincerely,

Debra M. Hendricks
